Style Master Impressions
Unfortunately, I find myself disappointed with Style Master. The cool-looking advanced color-picker shown on the website and even in the included documentation was nowhere to be found in the installed product!
In addition, I find the editor to be practically ususable. Maybe I’m just spoiled by the wonder of IDEA, which seems to know what I want even before I do, but Style Master seems to do all sorts of strange things in the editor.
Here are some of the more obvious bugs I found:
- If you cancel out of the color picker, it overwrites your color anyway!
- Using command-completion causes the editor to ignore my code preferences and revert to the default code preferences (putting the brace on the same line instead of the next, like I wanted).
- When I select a line of text, the editor will not let me use cut or copy.
- Focus is sometimes changed out from under me. I would really prefer if focus always stayed where it was, unless I specifically change the focus myself (it would be nice if there were a good keyboard shortcut like Ctrl-Tab or Ctrl-Up/Down Arrow or Alt-Arrow to shift control from pane to pane).
Maybe it’s just the Windows version, and all the positive comments I’ve seen have been from Mac users? Either way, I don’t see myself paying for this. Ah well, it was worth trying out, at least. For some reason, it motivated me to finally try using ems instead of pixels, so something good came of it.

I’ve written to Jennfer to let her know it is a problem with some older version of Windows, and that there is a fix available for the color picker problem, that the copy cut problem is an intermittent one that usually goes away after you copy or cut again, and the focus one we are working on.

Hi John, sorry I haven’t had time to reply to your email yet - thanks for the quick reply, I’ll definitely try out the new color picker sometime soon.
