Guilty Pleasure
Even before reading about the Pepsi Challenge on Asterisk*, I was planning on mentioning this, but I guess reading his post reminded me to actually do it.
Anyway, I have a confession to make. I really like the new Britney Spears song “Toxic”. I pretty much only listen to classical music, with a little Beatles and such thrown in occasionally. But thanks to my sister, who is my roommate, I’ve been exposed to a lot of new pop music on MTV. I usually try to get her to turn it off, but every time Toxic comes on, I find myself singing along and tapping my feet. I especially like the exotic wailing motifs in the strings and the wide leaps in the vocal part.
It seems almost everyone besides teenage girls think Britney’s songs are worthless, and I can’t really judge, myself, since the only other song of hers I know is “Oops! I did it agian”, and even that I hadn’t really heard until recently (yes, really!). I’ve also heard her sing once or twice on talk shows, and it seems like she was getting totally drowned out by her back-up singers and band, but that might have just been because she was using up all her breath with all that dancing! Anyway, either way, I just can’t deny that I really like Toxic.

Toxic’s got a slightly eerie techno feel, like Slave but pushed a little farther. Haven’t heard it the last couple o’ weeks, but doesn’t have these desending synth glisses in it? Definitely good stuff, and they had to push the video to later at night (guess that short “stewardess” skirt was too risque!)
