A purse for the modern girl

Most purses just don’t cut it for the modern, gadget-collecting girl. They have a big catch-all pocket, a thin zippered pocket, and maybe a cellphone pocket. Or maybe there will be two catch-all areas. But really, it’s not sufficient. For example, here’s a listing of the contents of my purse on any given day:

  • A big, fat wallet
    • 3 major credit cards
    • 5 or 6 store credit cards (hardly ever used)
    • 4 or 5 frequent buyer cards
    • Driver’s license
    • Paper money
    • Tons of change
    • ATM receipts
  • Tin of mints
  • Cell phone
  • iPod and headphones
  • Lip balm
  • Compact, lipstick, and lip gloss
  • Small vial of perfume
  • Car keys
  • House keys
  • Receipts
  • Coupons
  • Kleenex

What I really want is a purse with a whole bunch of pockets. Pockets for my cellphone, keys, iPod, make-up, etc. They would help protect each individual item (important for those expensive electronic gadgets) and make it easier to find them quickly (right now I have to dig around for quite a while to get something out of my purse, because, invariably, whatever I want has shifted to the bottom, under everything else).

I’ve seen some purses with a ton of pockets, but they’re all on the outside (making the bag look all bumpy and ugly) and most of the time the pockets are too small for anything but keys. Put the pockets on the inside, so the purse retains its sleek profile. And keep it small and pretty - if I wanted a sporty backpack, I’d buy that.

Anyone know where I can get a bag like that?

I have the same problem with too many gadgets/items to carry.

I have a cell phone, iPod, camera, walkman radio (for talk broadcasts), digital voice recorder, my wallet, hand lotion, aspirin, my iPod AC charger (for charging it through an outlet), headphones, and some other little stuff.

(Almost as much as you, but not quite)

I suppose technology will soon merge the cell phone, iPod, camera, radio, and voice recorder into one… but there is still those other things.

Sadly enough, I have to admit that I currently carry a “man bag.” hehe.

It’s a winter hat - the ones made out of cotton, and that cover your ears. I just turn it “inside-out,” and I toss everything in there. It kinda “stretches” to handle more items, too - much like elastic.

The hat is just an old San Francisco Giants hat - turned “inside out,” you can still see the “SF” logo.

Sure, it doesn’t look good, but I’m a guy - I don’t care about style that much, especially when it comes to a hand bag.

My girlfriend has been suggesting a “fanny pack,” and that’s where I end the conversation :) I have to put my foot down somewhere - it’s embarrasing enough to admit I carry such a bag.

Oh, and in response to your question - sorry, no, I do not know of any purses that would meet your needs. The only thing I can think of is something larger, like a laptop bag - they have some sporty ones that go over your shoulder, but I don’t know how big you want the bag to be.

Perhaps you know of any “guy” bags? (And NOT fanny packs ;)

Hehe yeah no way should you go for a fanny pack, unless you’re over 60 years old and on vacation. :) (Actually, I have worn one before, but only at Six Flags, and it was several years ago!)

The “man bag” thing is getting pretty popular, actually, from what I gather. I guess I’d go for something like a messenger bag or laptop bag, maybe a little smaller if you don’t want something so big.

The best luck I’ve had was with Kenneth Cole handbags and shoulderbags. They don’t have a ton of pockets, but most seem to have at least three internal pockets and a seperate cell phone pocket.

My personal pick is a medium handbag. It’s simple, it’s leather, and it comes in multiple colours. However, I’d highly recommend browsing around at your local department store, or better yet, your local TJMaxx.

Hmm, that does look nice, at least the outside. Expensive, though.

Yeah, I have been checking out TJMaxx, Marshall’s, and Filene’s Basement for good deals, and they do have a large selection. I guess I’m just super picky.
