Operatunity: a high-culture alternative to American Idol
Flipping channels tonight, I came across a program on PBS called Operatunity (warning: don’t follow the link if you don’t want to spoil the surprise of who wins). Unfortunately, I didn’t see the beginning, and missed most of the end, but what I did see was quite as engrossing as American Idol, minus the caustic (albiet honest) Simon, and set in the world of opera instead of popular music.
It’s amazing to see the talent hidden out there in the general population. Housewives and checkout clerks, carpenters and cooks - all with wonderful, powerful voices and a passion for opera. This special was filmed in England. I wonder if it would work as well in America. I’d love to see something like this on prime time, instead of just on PBS (and made into a season-long show, like American Idol).
I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for re-runs of this, and so should you!

It was a good show, do you get a lot of English TV over there?

PBS, our non-commercial network, shows a fair bit of British shows. I don’t really “get” a lot of the comedies, like Are You Being Served?, though. But I like some of the other stuff.

I can’t believe they even show that. It’s about 20 years old and not very funny
Thanks for visiting my site and being the first ever commenter. I like CDs too, I was mainly talking about shareable (ie. medium bitrate) mp3s.
