Walking through Watertown
Today I decided, having nothing better to do, to take a walking tour of Watertown. With the exception of maybe two bike rides and two bus rides, I’ve spent most of my time getting around by car since moving here two years ago. You don’t really absorb all that much when you’re in the car, especially if you’re driving, and don’t feel like risking your life so you can get a better view of what you’re driving past. I used to walk everywhere when I lived in Cambridge.
So anyway, my first destination was the Danish Pastry House, glowingly described on the H2Otown blog. I would have never known about its existence if I hadn’t read about it, because it’s so well hidden. I can’t imagine why any business would choose a location so hard to notice. Anyway, I sampled one of their puff pastries with a touch of custard inside and a dot of chocolate on top. Yummy.
Next I walked up Arlington Street, and decided to look around the old graveyard on the corner of Arlington and Mt. Auburn. It’s amazing how old it is - it dates back to the 1600’s. I wish I could see what this area looked like back then!
Then I went to Celebrity Ice Cream and Pizza across the street. It was my first time there, as well, though I’d noticed it many times driving past. Armed with an orange-flavored soft-serve ice-cream cone, I emerged to wander some more.
Following the hills, I went through some nice little neighborhoods north of Mt. Auburn Street, meeting a very friendly tabby cat on the way. I visited with her for a few minutes, admiring the garden she had been sleeping in. After more walking, I actually ended up in Belmont (I guess it’s not that far - Watertown isn’t very big), but then I turned back south again.
Then I found the loveliest big old houses on top of a hill, and even from the sidewalk, the view was wonderful. Looking east, I could see the Boston skyline, and looking south I could see the hills of Newton. I’ll have to remember the spot (Stoneleigh Road) for future walks.
Looking at the map now, I really didn’t cover that much of Watertown, but you wouldn’t know it from how my feet feel - I’ve got blisters! Next time I’ll wear sneakers instead of flip-flops.
