Land of corn

As we crossed from Vermont into Quebec two weeks ago, it was as if we had unexpectedly been transported to Central Illinois. The dense forested mountains were very suddenly replaced with flat, unending fields of corn. The only sign that we were in fact in Canada was the presence of numerous placards in French advertising “Mais Sucre” (which we surmised meant sweet corn).

Brandy and Sue seemed rather disturbed by all the fields of corn surrounding our car. I’m not sure why, but I guess if I can be disturbed by palm trees in Florida and California (and I do find them disturbing), maybe it makes sense that other people would be bothered by corn.

Since I was home in Illinois this past week, I decided to take advantage of the occasion and take some photos. My dad and I took advantage of the golden light right before sunset for our little photographic expedition.

Not that it was much of an expedition, really. You see, this field is just a few blocks from where I grew up.

OK, so this is too weird. I was looking at blogdigger.com at blogs in my area (W. Roxbury) and, once I dispensed with all the ones talking about gay marriage and Hurricane Katrina, yours popped up. And you’ve got these photos up that were taken probably blocks from where I grew up (Windsor Park). My folks still live there, in fact. Probably not too many others in this area who went to Central H.S.

    Nice coincidence. :)

Yeah, I grew up in Southwood. But I went to Uni High and would have gone to Centennial otherwise.

The first three pictures are of a field by Windsor & Mattis, but the last one with the silos was actually taken from a moving car as we were driving East. Not sure where Windsor Park is - I would have thought that people living on Windsor Street would be closer to Centennial than Central.

    Anyway, thanks for dropping by!
